RIDING THE WAVE:
MIZUNO WAVE RIDER 13

Review by Fit Specialist, Josh Keel

Over the years it seems that every shoe manufacturer has tried to re-invent the running shoe. In 1997 Mizuno succeeded with the Wave Rider 1.

Although not introduced with the Rider 1, Mizuno’s Wave Plate technology was certainly perfected with this shoe. Here we are, nearly 13 years later and Mizuno sits as one of the top brands in specialty running footwear. At Fleet Feet Sacramento the coming of December means two things for us: it’s the holiday season, and Mizuno’s update to the Wave Rider.

The Mizuno Wave Rider 13  is based on the same platform as the Rider 12 yet receives a completely new upper portion of the shoe. What this means is that you get the same great, responsive ride with a greatly improved fit. By utilizing a semi-rigid plastic plate to provide cushioning and support Mizuno is able to cut down on the amount of EVA foam that they use. This makes their shoes incredibly light, and the Rider 13 is no exception. Weighing in at 10.5oz. (Men’s Size 9) the Rider 13 is nearly 2oz. lighter than most other shoes in its class (mid priced neutral running). If you figure your cadence while running is at 85 steps per minute, at an 8-minute mile that’s 85 pounds of shoe you’re not lifting. It doesn’t take long to figure out the benefits of a lighter shoe.

The Wave Rider 13 is also very responsive. The wave plate provides great energy transfer from heel to toe. This means less energy being sent up into your body, and more being applied to the road, all together smoothing out the ride and enhancing your running experience.

Priced at $100.00 the Wave Rider 13 is competitively priced with other shoes in its class. We carry the shoe in regular (B) width, and narrow (2A) for women, and regular (D) width, and wide (2E) for men. I invite you to try one on and feel what its like to ride the wave.
